How this started
Built from helping businesses properly
A few years ago, I was working for a company that was struggling. Rather than watch them drown under the weight of a full-time salary they couldn't afford, I left and went freelance, so they could pay me only for what they actually needed.
Word got around. Other business owners found out I had the time and the know-how, and started asking me to build websites for them. Over the years, I've built everything from vehicle servicing systems through to full business platforms, each one tailored to what that particular business actually needed.
Somewhere along the way, I realised my head was full of product ideas, things I genuinely wanted to build, and they'd all need a home. So Lightest Night was born.
What I Kept Seeing
Expensive templates
Small business owners going to agencies and getting a templated WordPress site that had nothing bespoke about it. Everything done in spite of the client, just to raise an invoice. Ten grand. Minimum.
DIY sites that struggle
Others trying to do it themselves on Wix or Squarespace, ending up with something that looked like it was built in a hurry. Because it was. No thought given to whether people could actually find it or use it. More of a hindrance than a help.
Good businesses, rough edges
And then there were the businesses still running on name@gmail.com. Good businesses, doing great work, but looking like they'd set up shop five minutes ago. Buying a domain and setting up a proper email address isn't expensive. It just takes someone who knows how to do it.
That's where we come in.
A Bit About Me
I'm James. I'm based in Chelmsford, Essex. I've been building software for over twenty years, which really just means that when something goes wrong (and something always goes wrong) I've almost certainly seen it before and I know how to fix it.
Outside of work, my world revolves around my wife and son, and our wider family. I'm also a pilot, which has nothing to do with websites but quite a lot to do with the kind of person I am. Methodical, calm under pressure, and happiest when I'm solving problems.

How We Work
You won't get passed between departments or wait three days for a reply from someone who's never heard of you. At Lightest Night, the person you speak to on day one is the same person you speak to on day one hundred.
